The idea of ​​a Werkbundakademie came up as a result of the German Werkbundtag in 1998 in the House of Industrial Culture in Darmstadt and can be traced back to an initiative of the Deutscher Werkbund e.V. With the establishment of the Werkbundakademie Darmstadt e.V. on 1. November 2000, this idea was put into practice.

Since then, the academy has been promoting education, art and culture. She seeks content-related and organizational support and cooperation with interested people and institutions in all topics and activities.

The academy relies on forms of creative collaboration between scientists, designers and artists in tasks and projects that aim to facilitate, relieve, improve and cultural identity in everyday human life. This goal is pursued through projects, exhibitions, word and picture events, publications and statements and serves to raise awareness of good quality in the design of a humane environment in the interaction of art, technology, media, industry, science, craft and trade.
