Drinking water fountain - Historic Old Town Fountain
Drinking water fountain at Justus Liebig House, on Darmstadt's Old Town Island
Your own drinking bottles can be filled with water here free of charge.
The fountain, designed in 1862 by sculptor Johann Baptist Scholl the Younger (1818–1881), served as a public water supply and stood on the ‘island’ until the old town was destroyed. In 1885/86, a block of six houses was demolished in the densely built-up, overpopulated and neglected old town in order to improve living conditions there. This created the so-called ‘island’, for many the epitome of the old town.
Next to the rebuilt sandstone fountain stands the Niebergall Fountain, erected in 1930 to mark Darmstadt's 600th anniversary, commemorating the dialect poet Ernst Elias Niebergall (1815-1843). Information about the ‘island’ in the old town and the old town fountains can be found on the new information board.
