Olbrich House

Joseph Maria Olbrich's house was built in 1901 as part of the exhibition ‘A Document of German Art’. Situated at the foot of the Ernst Ludwig House, the main entrance was orientated towards its open staircase. The almost square building with a tile-red roof was given special accents by the blue and white tiled frieze, varying windows and a flower gallery.
An open staircase led to the loggia, which Olbrich called the ‘Piazza’. A kitchen garden, birch grove, flower beds and a wall fountain by Ludwig Habich completed the ensemble. Heavily damaged during the Second World War, the frieze, basement and garden gate have been preserved. Since 2018, the building has been undergoing conservation restoration to make the original design recognisable again.
Today, the German Academy for Language and Poetry is based in Haus Olbich.
