The GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research and the FAIR international particle accelerator centre currently under construction in Darmstadt are synonymous with globally unique research involving heavy ions. Researchers from all over the world conduct experiments at the large accelerator facilities in order to gain new insights into the structure of matter and develop applications in medicine and technology. FAIR is one of the largest research projects worldwide, where cosmic matter is produced and studied in the laboratory in order to understand the evolution of the universe.

Since its foundation in 1969, six new elements have been discovered here, including element 110, darmstadtium.

The public is cordially invited to visit the research facilities at GSI and FAIR. An introductory lecture will give you an overview of the facilities and current research at GSI and future research at FAIR. Afterwards, you will be taken on a tour of selected research stations and can take a look at the FAIR construction site from the viewing platform. During your visit, you will be looked after by our staff, who will endeavour to keep the level understandable and adapt it to your group.
