Generations of Darmstadt children have ridden on the historic children's railway. Today, the children's railway still enchants large and small Darmstadt residents visiting the Christmas market.

The Christmas trees for the Darmstadt Christmas Market traditionally come from the region.

A Nordmann fir from Airlenbach (Odenwald), provided by Darmstadt Citymarketing e.V., adorns Ludwigsplatz.

The trees have been supplied by the family forestry business Marco and Norbert Emig (www.emig-agrar.de) from Wald-Michelbach/Kocherbach for around 20 years.

The Darmstadt Showmen's Association, in co-operation with the City of Science Darmstadt, gave the Darmstadt Christmas market a landmark in 1996 with the Christmas pyramid on the market square fountain. The association finances the pyramid and the city provides support with the licences.

The pyramid was made in 1995 by the Hilmersdorf local history association in the Ore Mountains. For its 20th anniversary in 2015, the pyramid was given a new structural design with a substructure made of steel beams. It was also completely repainted and the lighting was converted to modern LED technology.

The assembly of the 9 metre high pyramid is carried out by the showmen's association and takes approx. 10 hours with 8 workers - the dismantling takes approx. 8 hours.

The beautiful star lights paper stars light the way to the Christmas season. All will find a their decoration for Advent andwonderful glowing Christmas gifts.

"Glühwein", hot wine, spiced with e.g. cinnemon, cloves, star ansieed and cardamom, is traditional for all German Christmas Markets.

Every year the Darmstadt "Glühweinprinzessin" ("mulled wine princess / Glühwein Princess") presents the new design of mulled wine glasses at the opening of the Darmstadt Christmas market. In addition, she is out and about at numerous appointments at the Christmas market and in town during the Advent season, accompanies St. Nicholas on his carriage ride on December 6th and is our ambassador for the Christmas Market.

The design for 2025 will be announced at the opening of the Christmas market on 17 November!

The Christmas trees for the Darmstadt Christmas Market, which decorate the market square and Luisenplatz every year, traditionally come from the region.

Market square: Nordmann fir from Olfen (Odenwald), 17 m high and weighing 3.8 tonnes

The tree was planted in 1976 to mark the 10th anniversary of the twinning of Olfen in the Odenwald with Trévignin in Savoy, the smallest municipal partnership in Europe. However, the tree has now grown too large and can no longer remain there.

Trees up to around 20 metres high are suitable for the market square and are always placed before the huts are erected after the pyramid has been set up.

The selection and installation of the Christmas trees has been a well-coordinated team effort for years. For around 20 years, the trees have been supplied by the family forestry business Marco and Norbert Emig (www.emig-agrar.de) from Wald-Michelbach/Kocherbach and then erected together with the help of the Darmstadt fire brigade.

Since 2023, the tree on the market square has had new lighting consisting of 13,500 LEDs. The lights will be animated in different colours every hour from 6 pm.

Baumstriezel are delicious delicacies made of dough, they come in different varieties such as Oreo, Rafaello, sugar cinnamon, Bounty, Hazellnut.

The yeast dough, based on a traditional Hungarian recipe, is vegan, and there is also a vegan filling, e.g. apple sauce, and a vegan topping for the outside, e.g. nuts, poppy seeds, cinnamon sugar, vanilla or Oreo.

Handcrafted jewellery & festive tree decorations – made with love in Darmstadt!

For almost two decades, we have been passionately dedicated to the fascinating material that is glass. In our small workshop in the north of Darmstadt, we use handmade glass beads, fine wire, leather and other materials to create individual pieces of jewellery – each one unique or part of a lovingly designed small series.

During Advent and Christmas, our workshop is transformed into a sparkling studio: delicate angels, shining stars and colourful glass trees are created entirely by hand and bring festive sparkle to your home. The glass figures are particularly beautiful when illuminated by the light of the Christmas tree or in the window.

Our Christmas collection is rounded off by original flying and driving Santa Clauses made of tin, as well as specially engraved baubles with typical Darmstadt motifs – a piece of local craftsmanship to give as a gift or keep for yourself.

On Friedensplatz, the historic horse-drawn carousel, built in Mainz in 1930, invites you to take a nostalgic ride.

We are a creative forge with company headquarters in Freudenstadt, a small town located in the idyllic northern Black Forest. As a manufacturer, we process the entire tree: the trunk wood, strong and weak branches, as well as the bark.
