City of Science
The concentration of research institutions in Darmstadt is unusually high. In their diversity they represent very different areas of science.
A technical university, two universities of applied sciences and numerous public and private scientific and research institutions are based here. Research is also carried out in a wide variety of Darmstadt companies and the results are implemented in products and processes.
Did you know, for example, that the TU Darmstadt set up the world's first chair for electrical engineering in 1882 and that the first German data centre was in Darmstadt in the 1960s? It is not for nothing that the city has officially been named "City of Science" since 1997 and won the Bitkom "Digital City" competition in 2017.
