Science in Darmstadt
Darmstadt is Germanys first "City of Science". The Hessian Ministry of the Interior honours the national and international significance of the scientific institutions with granting the titel in 1997.Almost 45,000 students study at the Technical University, the University of Applied Science Darmstadt and the Evangelische Hochschule. The city's major research facilities include three Fraunhofer-Institutes, the leading center for digital security CRISP, the Ökoinstitut and the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research - where the chemical element "Darmstadtium" was discovered - and, with ESOC and EUMETSAT, also two European institutions. Over thirty other research facilities are world-renowned.
