Numerous Darmstadt cultural institutions joined forces in 2020 and created a virtual advent calendar under the motto "Darmstadt bildet Banden". In this cooperation, the diversity of Darmstadt's culture will continue to be presented - e.g. with digital and virtual offers or the display of various shop windows in the city centre.

Events: See you in Darmstadt!

+++ Due to COVID-19, there may be restrictions or short-term changes to events and exhibitions. +++

Galerie Netuschil: Gerd Winter - New Painting

02.05.21 - 12.06.21

The exhibition mainly includes pictures by Gerd Winter that were created in 2019/2020/2021. The central concern of the artist is to make painting visible in all its multi-layered facets and to allow the colours to enter into a dialogue with one another. In the last five years in particular, Gerd Winter has broken up his strict vertical grid, gives space to painting and then delimits it in the next moment with the help of geometric elements.

HILDE ROTH. A time travel through Darmstadt 1950 – 1990

29.05.21 - 03.10.21

Another cross-Rhine cooperation with the photo triennial RAY Fotografieprojekte Frankfurt / RheinMain will be HILDE ROTH from summer 2021. The exhibition in the Kunstforum of the TU Darmstadt puts a special Darmstadt personality in the focus of an exhibition: the photographer and post-war reporter Hilde Roth (1927-2019) was one tireless documentarist and committed social observer. From around 1950 to 2000 she worked as an editorial photographer for the two major Darmstadt newspapers - Tagblatt and Echo.

Illustrious figures 13 - FREIBILD

11.06.21 - 18.06.21

The illustrators Darmstadt are not frightened by the special circumstances of this time and simply bring their works outside. This year, the 13th exhibition “Illustre Gestalten” shows specially created large-format works under the motto “Free picture” in front of the Centralstation. The summer show goes on for a whole week in the heart of the city - from 11. to 18. June.

Piano-Festival at the Literaturhaus

On this weekend of the festival, the Chopin Society turns its attention to the professional pianists among its members and invites them to take part in a benefit event. Of the dozen or so addressees, all of them responded to the invitation by accepting them. "It's great how innovative you are and what you do in Darmstadt," said Lisa Wellisch, for example, who was happy about the opportunity to appear in this time of few events. Together with the cellist Tatjana Uhde she will perform Robert Schumann's “Märchenbilder”.

Boris Bloch, Henning Brand, Aleksandra Mikulska, the Panufnik Trio, Carmen Piazzini, Mariana Römer-Litzmann, Sabine Simon, Sofia Moguillansky, Leoni Sklia, Alexandra Piperidou, Laura Sobolewska, Marta Wryk, Mariko Sudo and Mathieu Jocqué also play. The income will be used to promote young talent.

Piano recital with Hisako Kawamura

17.07.21 - 17.07.21
20:00

The victory in Darmstadt in 1999 was the springboard for Hisako Kawamura to even greater triumphs, for example at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, Concours Géza Anda in Zurich, Concorso Pianistico A.Casagrande in Terni, Concorso Internationale di Musica G.B.Viotti in Vercelli. By winning the Clara Haskil Concours in Vevey at the latest, she drew the attention of the music scene and has since led a lively concert life on several continents, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. Her programme includes works by Debussy, Beethoven, Chopin and the Japanese composers Dai Fujikura and A. Yashiro.

Kawamura has been teaching at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen since 2015, where she was appointed professor in 2015. She is also a special lecturer at Tokyo College of Music.

Golden Leaves Festival

27.08.21 - 29.08.21

The Golden Leaves Festival is a gem and utopia in late summer. It stands out from other festivals. The focus is on the love of music - everything else in the second row. The festival lives through the people organising it with attention to detail. And by the audience, who enthusiastically accept what is being offered to them on and in front of the stage - eagerly listening or frenetically cheering. The audience and the makers of many Bedroomdisco-living room concerts in Darmstadt off-locations have known each other for years.

In the meanwhile 9th edition the festival welcomes the following bands: BOY, SOHN, HVOB live (clubset), Sylvan Esso, Kat Frankie, Provinz, Charlie Cunningham, Tom Rosenthal, Mavi Phoenix, Lola Marsh, Martin Kohlstedt, Kytes, Jules Ahoi, Black Sea Dahu, Porridge Radio, Los Bitchos, Roy Bianco & The Abbrunzati Boys

Kulturfest at the Literaturhaus

10.09.21
18:00

The Literaturhaus Darmstadt with all its resident associations organizes a cultural festival. After the greeting by Mayor Jochen Partsch, the cover band VISIBLE CHANGE takes over the open-air stage in front of the house. Further highlights are the performance of poet, beatboxer and spoken word lyricist Dalibor Markovic and an Indian dance group.

The festival not only offers the opportunity to take part in guided tours through the large building and the art archive, readings, dances and musical performances are also on the programme. Book tables and libraries invite you to browse and all twenty societies present their work.

Piano recital and at the same time prelude to the 26th International Master Class for Pianists with Charles Richard-Hamelin

21.09.21 - 21.09.21

The 31-year-old, born in the province of Québec, is considered one of the most important musicians of his generation. In 2015 he won second prize at the world's most important International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw and also the Krystian Zimerman Prize for the best performance of a Chopin sonata.

Charles Richard-Hamelin tours through Canada, the USA, Europe and the Asian continent. So far he has performed with more than 50 ensembles and played under the direction of well-known conductors.

Papiertheatersammlung Walter Röhler in Darmstadt

Walter Röhler, born in DA in 1911, actually wanted to become theatre director, but had to be content with the profession of a teacher. His passion for the theatre prompted him to build a home stage and to perform plays himself. In addition, he started early to build a collection of original sheets for the assembly of paper theatres and to collect fully assembled stages.

In 1994, the collection was donated to the Verein Nachbarschaftsheim Darmstadt e.V.. The association has since managed the collection on behalf of the City of Darmstadt. Since September 1997 the paper theatre collection has been housed in the municipal building at Darmstrasse 2 and is open to the public. It comprises 114 paper theatres, 77 complete sets of figures and scenery, over 9,000 paper theatre sheets and a specialist library and much more.

Opening times of the collection always up-to-date on the website: www.papiertheater.info/darmstadt.html

In any case, it is advisable to contact Ms. Wahnrau in advance of a visit (contact details on the website).

A detailed model of the houses and the very narrow streets (scale of 1:160) shows how crowded it was to live there and brings back to life the area which Ernst Elias Niebergall immortalised in his cult novel „Der Datterich“.

Centralstation (former power station)

The Centralstation was built in its original form in 1888 as Darmstadt’s first power station. The power station served mainly as a supplier of electricity for the street lamps in the town centre, the royal court and its theatre and, from 1897, also for the city’s trams. The plant was operational until 1921 and made Darmstadt, after New York and Berlin, the third city worldwide with such a comprehensive electricity supply.

In the 1990’s, the area around the City Carree was completely transformed and today, the Centralstation is a venue which features readings, exhibitions, lectures, dance events and jazz and pop concerts with artists from all over the world.

At concerts, people with disabilities are also welcome. They are getting discounted tickets and also get past entry to ensure a good spot right in front of the stage. In the basement there is a "toilet for all", which is easily accessible by elevator.

Darmstadt State Theatre

The Staatstheater Darmstadt offers music and dance theater, drama and concert. The theater is located on the Georg-Büchner-Platz in the neighborhood of the Ludwigskirche and the Mollerhaus and is visible with its eye-catching theater portal as well as its bright marble facade, accentuated with shimmering brass plates.

When it was completed in 1972, it was one of the first theatres in Germany in which stages, workshops and administration were gathered together under one roof.

Accessibility:

The areas are all accessible by elevator and in the small and large house as well as in the Kammerspiele wheelchair users can avail pre-reserved places. A floor guidance system and the marking of staircases allows orientation for visually impaired and blind people. For people with hearing aids, there is an inductive hearing system in all three rooms.

Messel Pit World Heritage Site

In 1995, the Messel pit was the first German natural monument in the list of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. It provides a unique insight into the early evolution of mammals and documents the development of the Earth 48 million years ago when, after the end of the dinosaur age, explosive changes determined the animal and plant world.

Several 10,000 fossils from the Eocene period have been excavated in the Maarvulkan Lake which was created 48 million years ago, and about 3,000 new finds are added annually. In addition to the high number and diversity of animal and plant fossils, their unique preservation of whole body skeletons, skin and coat shadows, feathers and stomach contents is particularly in the Messel pit.

Guided tours are held every day and invite visitors to discover this unique place. Anyone who visits this place will be amazed by the diversity of topics, which is also reflected in the permanent exhibition "Zeit und Messel Welten" (visitor centre). Here, industrial history, landscape, volcanism, rainforest and evolution are explained. The treasure chamber with several original finds also exerts a great fascination.

Porcelain Collection of the Grand Duchy of Hessen in Prinz-Georgs Palais

With the opening of the Porcelain Museum in 1908, Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse and by Rhine made the princely family's possessions, which had been accumulated over centuries, accessible to the public.

One focus is on the ceramic products of the Kelsterbach factory and the Höchst and Frankenthal factories located in the region. With Meissen, Nymphenburg, Sèvres, Vienna and St. Petersburg, further important manufactories are represented. With more than 4,000 objects from faience, stoneware and porcelain, the collection provides an overview of the artistic development of European ceramics from its beginnings to the end of the 19th century.

Exhibition Hall on the Mathildenhöhe

The "Hochzeitsturm“ (Wedding Tower) and the Exhibition Hall (1907-1908) were the work of Joseph Maria Olbrich. Hidden under the hall is the fascinating vault of a walled water reservoir, a technical masterpiece.

The reservoir was built between 1877 and 1880 to the plans of the engineer Otto Lueger at the highest point of the Mathildenhoehe – and at the time fed the city’s water supply network.

Due to renovations, the exhibition hall is currently cloesd.

Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt

The art and natural history collections of the counts and grand dukes are the foundation of today’s Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt (HLMD, Hessian State Museum). With its mixture of art, culture and natural history exhibits, the museum is one of the oldest all-round museums in Europe. In a close cooperation between Grand Duke Ernst-Ludwig and Alfred Messel, the building was specially designed for the different collections and was formally opened in 1906.

Accessibility is achieved in the HLMD to the best of its ability - as far as this is possible in an old building. In the house there are ramps, lifts, which can be used by physically disabled persons, and barrier-free toilets. In addition, there is an audioguide for blind visitors, who support the specially designed six touch models.

In the basement of the museum the museum café "HERZBLUT & ZINKE", offers warm dishes made from fresh, local produce as well as coffee and cake. The café is closed at the moment.

The HLMD will be open again from 12. March 2021. The museum can only be visited after booking an online time slot ticket or registering by telephone.

Weißer Turm

In the middle ages, the Weisser Turm (White Tower) was part of the town’s fortification. After the demolition of the city walls in the eighteenth century, it became a clock and bell tower. Its silver bell chimed whenever a member of the ruling family died. Today, the tower is a landmark in Darmstadt’s city centre and is home to a photo gallery.

A large collection of weapons, equipment and hunting trophies as well as 13 differently laid-out saloons illustrate the life there and the nobility's passion for hunting.
